Roses for the Living
This ceremony is a UCT way of honoring a select few of our volunteer
members annually. The following little poem opens this impressive
ceremony after which about a half dozen people are presented with a
"Rose" one by one. A short reason is read out by the presenter before
calling up the recipient. The short ceremony is normally closed with
another poem of the chairperson's choice. Something along the line of
putting differences aside is well accepted.
The Poem:
I would rather have one little rose
from the garden of a friend,
than to have the choicest flowers
when my stay on earth must end.
I would rather have the kindest word
and a smile that I can see,
than flattery when my heart is still
and this life has ceased to be.
Bring me all the flowers today
whether white or pink or red,
I would rather have one blossom now
than a truck load when I'm dead.
